About level 6.5

Box dye lifts only about 2–3 levels. The hair stops around level 6–7, where lightened hair shows orange-gold — far warmer than the cool blonde on the box.

  • This box can't lift your hair that far. Permanent dye lifts about 2.5 levels on hair like yours. You start at level 4; this shade is level 9, so expect to stop around level 7.
  • Lightening exposes warm pigment. At about level 7, lightened hair shows orange-gold underneath.
  • The cool tone cancels only part of it. The ash in 9.1 is balanced for level 9. It can't fully neutralize the stronger orange-gold at level 7.

Box 7.0 promises

Medium Natural Blonde · permanent

Likely result

Roots ≈ 7.5, lengths ≈ 4

Color can't lift color: the old dye in the lengths stays dark while the natural roots lighten — classic hot roots.

  • Within this box's lifting range. Permanent dye lifts about 3 levels on hair like yours. You start at level 6; this shade is level 7.
  • Lightening exposes warm pigment. At about level 7.5, lightened hair shows orange-gold underneath.
  • Nothing in this shade cancels that warmth. 7.0 is a natural shade, so the exposed orange-gold adds to its warmth.

About level 8.5

Light shades blend gray instead of covering it. Overall it can look close to the box, but the grays stay brighter, like soft highlights — great for blending. For full coverage, a level 7 or darker natural shade works far better.

  • Within this box's lifting range. Permanent dye lifts about 2.5 levels on hair like yours. You start at level 6; this shade is level 9.
  • Lightening exposes warm pigment. At about level 9, lightened hair shows yellow underneath.
  • Nothing in this shade cancels that warmth. 9.0 is a natural shade, so the exposed yellow adds to its warmth.

EXAMPLE 4 · Bleached to level 9, natural level 6

Level 9 · Very Light Blonde
#594E45

Box 5.1 promises

Light Ash Brown · permanent
#594D43 → #4A4D3F

Likely result

Roots ≈ 5, lengths ≈ 5

Lightened hair has lost its warm pigments. A cool brown straight on top can turn murky or greenish — colorists add a warm filler first.

  • Porous ends grab more color. Dry or damaged ends absorb extra dye and can turn darker or duller than the roots. A strand test on the ends is worth it.
  • Going much darker on light hair. Very light hair has lost its warm pigments. A big jump darker with a cool or neutral shade can look flat, murky or slightly green and fade fast. Colorists add a warm 'filler' first.
  • Fine hair processes fast. Fine strands lift and absorb dye quickly — results can be lighter when lifting and darker when depositing. Watch the timing.

About level 6

Staying at your level and adding tone is where box color shines: the result lands close to the box.

  • Porous ends grab more color. Curly and coily hair tends to be more porous. Dry or damaged ends absorb extra dye and can turn darker or duller than the roots. A strand test on the ends is worth it.
  • Going darker or staying level deposits well. Darker and same-level shades deposit evenly, so this result should look close to the box.

About level 7

Highlighted and natural strands take dye differently, so one box usually gives stripes instead of an even blonde.

  • This box can't lift your hair that far. Permanent dye lifts about 2.5 levels on hair like yours. You start at level 4; this shade is level 8, so expect to stop around level 7.
  • Lightening exposes warm pigment. At about level 7, lightened hair shows orange-gold underneath.
  • Nothing in this shade cancels that warmth. 8.0 is a natural shade, so the exposed orange-gold adds to its warmth.
